CASE STUDIES Dan Perjovschi (Romania)
© Dan Perjovschi Dan Perjovschi is a visual artist mixing drawing, cartoon and graffiti in work often created directly on the walls of museums and contemporary art spaces across the world. His drawings comment on current political, social or cultural issues. He has played an active role in the development of the civil society in Romania and has stimulated exchange between the Romanian and international contemporary artistic scenes. Dan has been involved in Visiting Arts’ initiatives following his participation in the Artist to Artist International scheme which allows UK artists to nominate an overseas artist to work with. Dan paired with well-known British artist Graham Ramsey in 2004 and from this visit was invited back to Scotland to undertake a residency at the Collective Gallery. Dan’s return to the UK saw him as the unofficial artist-in-residence during the 2004 Edinburgh Festivals. He acted as a critical observer and sometime participant, mingling with writers, performers and audiences, picking up on the cultural debates and responding to both the local and broader global contexts. His humorous chalk drawings were displayed on regularly updated panels throughout the city and in a freely distributed newspaper. Since then he has participated in the culturebase.net Europe Now / Europe Next programme and in 2006 Visiting Arts produced an online artists profile for him.
© Dan Perjovschi Dan’s debate provoking work and innovative commentary on contemporary collective consciousness has reached main-steam international audiences through major commissions and exhibitions. In 2006, Dan created The Room Drawing on the walls of Tate Modern’s Members’ Room following research and interviews with Tate staff members, Tate Members and representatives from Tate Modern’s Council. Following his inclusion in London’s Frieze Art Fair, Tate was able to acquire two further installations for their collection.
