The curators visit Galerie Plan B to a Victor Man exhibition
curated by Mihai Pop

In October 2005, Visiting Arts led a six-day research visit to Romania with support from The Ratiu Foundation.  The programme was open to application from UK-based curators and involved the following participants:

Sian Bonnell, Director, TRACE
Ben Borthwick, Assistant Curator, Tate Modern
Jenny Brownrigg, Exhibitions Department, University of Dundee
Kim Sukie Dhillon, Independent Curator
Elisabetta Fabrizi, Assistant Curator, BALTIC
Kerri Moogan, Programme Manager, Centre for Contemporary Arts
The group was accompanied by Ramona Mitrica, Director of the Ratiu Foundation UK.

The visit explored Romania’s vibrant contemporary art scene through a series of museum and gallery visits and networking events with artists and curators in Bucharest, Cluj and Iasi.

The purpose of the visit was to expand knowledge and awareness of Romania's rich cultural heritage, to stimulate arts activity between the UK and Romania and to develop sustainable networks and encourage collaborative working practice between the two arts sectors.

"The Visiting Arts trip to Romania was an incredible insight into an art scene that is being built by artists from the grass roots up".
Ben Borthwick, Tate Modern

Since the visit a number of presentations of Romanian artists have taken place in the UK facilitated by Visiting Arts and supported by The Ratiu Family Charitable Foundation.

Anca Berena and four members of her artist-led group took part in a Romania / UK exchange and group exhibition with five artists from the Dundee-based group GENERATORprojects.  The month-long programme at the Cooper Gallery, University of Dundee was curated by participant Jenny Brownrigg and took place between November and December 2006.  The platform explored how artist-led groups can work in collaboration and celebrated GENERATORprojects’s tenth anniversary. www.generatorprojects.co.uk

Bucharest-on-Sea was a pilot project of a new residency programme to encourage cultural co-operation between the UK (South West England and the South East Coast) and Romania.  The project provided time to research new areas of work and to network and build relationships between galleries, organisations, and artists in Romania and England.  Romanian painter Adrian Ghenie was resident at Trace in Dorset between October and November 2006 as part of a project curated by Sian Bonnell and Kim Sukie Dhillon.
