Russian Federation Museum Curators UK Study Tours

A visit to Big Pit National Coal Museum, October 2006 © Vladimir Potanin Foundation

Visiting Arts has now delivered two Russian Federation museum curators UK study tours. These visits, supported by the Vladimir Potanin Foundation (Moscow) and British Council working in partnership with Visiting Arts and the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), have enabled the Russian Federation museum sector to benefit from UK expertise and to develop organisational and professional links with colleagues in the UK. Feedback from the participants has been unanimous in that their acquaintance with UK museum practice has expanded their understanding of contemporary museum practice.  Praise was also given for the diversity of the museums visited encompassing National, local authority and independent museums, with a broad spectrum of profile, scale of operation and financial means.  The industrial museums visited on both tours were also singled out for praise as there is a huge potential for this type of museum across the Russian Federation.  All partners have been gratified to note that participants from the first tour have already practically applied the knowledge gained during their visit.

Both visits have been accompanied by British Council staff, led by Anna Genina, together with staff from the Vladimir Potanin Foundation.  Visits have included a day of national and regional contextualisation with presentations by DCMS, Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Museum Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and the Museums Association.  The first tour visited museums across England, Scotland and Wales, whereas the second tour had a single regional focus in Yorkshire. In addition to the structured visits, participants had free time to visit other museums in London according to their own specific interests.

Themes explored during the study visits include audience development and education in museums; social inclusion and partnership; tourism industry and museums; funding and other financial issues; museum networks; and museum governance and management.
