SKART at Reunion Residency (Serbia)

Belgrade-based artists SKART took part in a Reunion Residency in Hackney, London, February 2007. They continued to work on their New Embroideries project with local communities from Hackney.

During their time, they held workshops and embroidery training sessions in schools, community centres, retirement homes and at SPACE studios where they were in residence.

Their workshops challenged traditional Balkan embroideries by creating contemporary rhymes and images that related to the maker’s own experiences. Each piece made was then exhibited in local areas of Hackney; shops windows, libraries, public areas and community centres.

Near the end of their residency SPACE held an exhibition where members of the community attended and spoke about their respective pieces.

Visual Diary

Whilst working on the project, both Dragan and Djordje kept a visual diary of their time in London, especially their experiences of Hackney.

This image candidly depicts what happened when one of them accidentally got on the wrong side of a London bus driver. The one further below is what they had in a typical London cafe.
