CASE STUDIES

In May 2006 the EU DG for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities awarded a grant to Mobile.Home, a mobility awareness raising project run by European partners IETM, the Finnish Theatre Information Centre, Pearle, Goethe-Institut, Visiting Arts, on-the-move and their associated partners.
This was a year-long project celebrating the “European Year of Workers’ Mobility 2006”, which looked at obstacles, solutions and case studies regarding the movement of arts and artists across European borders - as guaranteed by the European union treaties. It gauged the phenomenon of “mobility” from all technical, philosophical and artistic perspectives, and took place in the shape of four main strands:
HELPDESK
The MOBILE.HOME Helpdesk, set up by Pearle and its project partners, ran from 16 June to 16 October 2006. It offered effective and accessible information related to the administrative, legal and social aspects of performing arts mobility within Europe.
REPORT
During the Spring and Summer of 2006, Richard Polacek (on behalf of PEARLE) researched the topic of 'mobility' through 100 face-to-face and telephone interviews with performing arts companies from over 20 European countries, discussing and collating issues around taxation and social security and intellectual property rights and financial issues, especially related to Culture2000 projects. Richard feedback at the conference on mobility in October 2006, and in March 2007 published the report entitled: Study on Impediments to Mobility in the EU Live Performance Sector and on Possible Solutions
DIGITAL PORTRAITS
Goethe-Institut (Brussels), Visiting Arts and Fondazione Fitzcarraldo presented stories from artists who have worked and lived in different EU countries. (Click to view ours on the right hand side of this page)
CONFERENCE
The above strands were brought together in a major cross-sectorial conference held in Helsinki, November 2006, where arts organisations, employers, public administrations, networks and others were invited to discuss and debate key topics, good practice models and practical solutions to issues around mobility. It coincided with IETM's annual meeting and included group sessions, training sessions, presentations, information points and networking events.
