1mile2 Cardiff

1mile² Cardiff is taking place until October this year in collaboration with photographer Mahesh Shantaram.

Mahesh Shantaram is a photographer based in Bangalore, India. His work draws on the story-telling potential of landscape photography as a method of social documentary with many of his images focusing on public and social spaces. http://thecontrarian.in/

1mile² Cardiff takes place in Butetown, Grangetown and Splott and invites local people to participate online and in activities, events and performances. As part of the initiative, professional and community dance companies will create new work, inspired by the people of the square mile and in response to local and global cultural and environmental issues.

The project is hosted by Wales Millennium Centre in collaboration with Cardiff Council’s Arts Active and Carbon Lite initiatives and delivered in partnership with the Arts Council of Wales. The project is commissioning new dance works by India Dance Wales, Jukebox and National Dance Company Wales Associates which will be presented as part of a day of free public activity at Wales Millennium Centre on Sunday 30 October 2011.

This day will also involve sharings, workshops and showcases from many community groups in the Butetown, Grangetown and Splott neighbourhoods. Anyone can participate in the project by sharing their view, images, videos, thoughts and ideas about the square mile through the website. www.square-mile.net
