curators visits
29.05.09
The Visiting Arts Curators' visit to Tehran took place between 20-27 April 2009. A group of six UK curators were given the opportunity to spend time in the Iranian capital visiting artists, seeing work, visiting galleries and arts organisations, and absorbing the atmosphere of a city which embraces both tradition and modernity.
The curators who took part were:
Francis McKee, director, Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow
Angela Peagram, project director, Art & Sacred Places, UK wide
Tom Trevor, director, Arnolfini, Bristol
Alessandro Vincentelli, acting head of programme, Baltic, Gateshead
Kyla McDonald, assistant curator, Tate Modern Acquisitions, London
Nicola Triscott, artistic director, The Arts Catalyst, London
The curators also gave informal presentations on their work and institutions to an audience of 50 artists at one of Tehran's independent galleries, followed by a Q&A and networking session.
Visiting Arts Curators' Research Visits enable UK curators to visit different countries and regions of the world offering the opportunity to encounter contemporary arts practice in specific contexts and to forge cultural links and understanding. Previous visits undertaken by Visiting Arts have included journeys to China, Colombia, Egypt and Russia, all of which have resulted in considerable arts activity in the UK.
