Middle Ground

Middle Ground; A discussion, with Art school Palestine and Visiting Arts on Friday 17 September 18.00 – 19.30 Cinema space. Contemporary Urban Centre, LIVERPOOL

The session will explore contemporary ideas around artists working and travelling. Within the context of the exhibition ‘Future Movements’ curated by Samar Martha we are given insight to the notion of residency and how the artists respond to this ‘time away.’ Artists are given the opportunity to step in and experience a new city but how does this influence their practice and what does it mean for artists to be in a new city? This session will explore the cities influence on artists’ practices, it will provide artists with the opportunity to recount their experiences and to examine the often ignored middle ground, the time between residency and finished work. What processes happen between these to moments?

  • 18.00 Welcome and introduction to City States, ‘Future Movements’ by Samar Martha (Art School Palestine) and Adam Knights (Visiting Arts)
  • 18.15 – 18.45 Artists will explore the notion of exchange and the cities influence.

In conversation with, Larissa Sansour, Sarah Beddington, Bouchra Khalili, and Raouf Haj Yihya

  • 18.45 – 19.00 Q&A
  • 19.00 – 19.30 Presentation of artist Yazan Khalili’s book/project Landscape of Darkness and the launch of an online project entitled ArtTerritories by Shuruq Harb and Ursula Biemann.

Notes
Future Movements
City States: Jerusalem
(City States is a strand of the 2010 Liverpool Biennial’s international exhibition)

Future Movements draws inspiration from the city of Jerusalem and its changing urban structure. The exhibition takes the viewer to places outside the spiritual Old City to locations that, despite their importance in shaping the contemporary metropolis, have rarely been referenced or addressed in literature and the visual arts. The exhibition exposes Jerusalem as a contemporary city in all its physical, social, economic and political complexities – demonstrating how the urban space is divided, conquered, abandoned and re-occupied.
