Romania – UK Cultural Managers Connection

As the post-dictatorship Romanian art scene quickly gathers momentum and delivers a series of contemporary artists gaining recognition on the international art scene, the role of its cultural managers and promoters is crucial. Working with the Ratiu Foundation (London) and Gabriela Tudor Foundation (Bucharest), Visiting Arts oversaw a unique professional development opportunity for 5 emerging Romanian cultural practitioners in November 2010.

Bogdan Georgescu (Bucharest), Irina Malcea (Bucharest), Mirela Nastasache (Bucharest), Andrada Vaida (Timisoara), and Monica Zarna (Arad) spent a week in London taking advantage of all the opportunities for professional advancement a major art centre has to offer. Arranging a series of introductions on their behalf with UK professionals from the field of performing arts and cultural management, Visiting Arts provided the 5 emerging cultural managers a solid overview of the UK cultural scene and a chance to meet its important players. Meetings included the National Theatre Studio, Live Art Development Agency, Arts Admin, Arcola Theatre, LIFT – London International Festival of Theatre, Independent Dance, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The successful programme was well received and described as “a reference point for my future activity” by one participant, Irina Malcao of the Romanian Cultural Institute.
The Romanian guests also attended separate meetings with Nicolae Ratiu, Chairman of the Ratiu Foundation; and Dr Mike Phillips OBE, writer, historian, curator and Co-Director of ProFusion International Creative Consultancy, who acted as a the cultural managers’ mentor during their stay in London. To allow the guests to meet as many arts professionals interested in the independent Romanian arts scene, the Ratiu Foundation organised a roundtable and networking reception. Among the participants were Prof Noel Witts (Leeds Metropolitan University), theatre director Jonathan Banatvala (London Southbank University), and publisher Cheryl Robson (Aurora Metro Press).
