Russian Federation Museum & Gallery Curators’ UK Study Visit

In May Visiting Arts, in partnership with British Council and the Vladimir Potanin Foundation Moscow, delivered a 10-day study visit for a group of museum curators from across the Russian Federation.

The participants were: 

  •  Ekaterina Rychkova – State Museum of Fine Arts, of the Republic of Karelia
  •  Elena Petrova – National Art Museum of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)
  •  Aleksey Starkov - State Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum Izborsk (Pskov Region)
  •  Veronica Bushlyakova - Tver State United Museum (Tver Region)
  •  Yulia Tavrizyan – Perm Picture Gallery (Perm)
  •  Pyotr Nazarov – Surgut Local History Museum

Also accompanying the group were Elizaveta Utolina and Olga Sinitsina from the British Council Moscow, Natalia Samoilenko from the Vladimir Potanin Association, Inna Prilezhaeva from the Association of Cultural Managers, and Sioned Hughes from Visiting Arts.


The visit began with a contextualisation morning at British Council Spring Gardens in London, with presentations from Jane Weeks Cultural Heritage Adviser for the British Council, Hedley Swain Director of Programme Delivery for the Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), Lucy Perry of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Marcus Gilleard of the National Trust and Sam Hunt from the Association of Independent Museums (AIM).


The group then participated in a full programme of museum and gallery visits across London and the South East. Blythe House (the joint storage facility for the V&A and British Museum), Whitechapel Gallery, the Geffrye Museum, the Churchill War Rooms and the Tate Modern were the London destinations, where the group also went on a London Duck Tour; a road and river adventure past famous landmarks in an amphibious craft first used in WW2. The latter half of the study visit was spent at Red House in Kent, Maidstone Museum, Faversham Museum, Dover Castle, the Folkestone: A Town Unearthed archaeology project, Folkestone Triennial, the Turner Contemporary in Margate, Bodiam Castle, the Towner Gallery of Eastbourne and Brighton Museum & Art Gallery.
