Visiting Arts Iran Producers’ Network Launch

In Nov 2008, Visiting Arts launched the Iran Producers’ network, dedicated to producers working with Iran. It met for the first time during the Barbican’s Iran: New Voices season of work from Iran.

The meeting was attended by sixteen producers from all over the UK, all of whom have travelled to Iran on Visiting Arts Producers’ Visits and In-Country Workshops in the past. The artistic director of Bazi Theatre Group, Attila Pessyani, who was performing in Quartet: A Journey North as part of the Iranian season, was also present. Pessyani has a longstanding relationship with Visiting Arts, a track record of international performances, and his play Devil’s Ship was performed at the Edinburgh International Festival 2008.

Discussions covered issues of travel to and from Iran, working in translation, negotiating relationships with funding bodies, and debated how working relations with the country could be developed and improved.

It became clear that there was need for a support network for producers and artists wanting to collaborate with Iranian colleagues, and it was obvious that there were many unanswered questions which need to be worked on and overcome in order to build and maintain strong channels of dialogue between UK and Iranian artists, producers and arts organisations.
