Writers Exchange 2010

In partnership with Visiting Arts, West Dean College (West Sussex) has invited two poets who write in Arabic, to take part in a one week residency in the Sussex Downs for the first week of November 2010.

Nujoom al-Ghanem is an Emirati writer who combines popular writing with challenging contemporary verse. Fadhil al-Azzawi originally from Iraq, now based in Berlin, has developed an extraordinary international reputation for his perceptive and entertaining verse and performance.

At the end of the week, both poets will join Ramsey Nasr, the Dutch poet laureate and a writer originally from Palestine, in London for a shared recital and debate at the Southbank Centre at Saturday 6 November 2010 at 4pm. The meeting will provide a platform for the writers to read work developed during the West Dean College Residency and engage in debate and discussion around cultural heritage, language and practice, chaired by writer and lecturer Greg Mosse.

Visiting Arts and West Dean College are also developing further projects that will take place in 2011, including plans to work with researchers and artists in Jordan specifically focussing on politically motivated art that will see further exchanges with the Middle East and North Africa.
