decibel performing arts showcase
Groundbreaking programme of culturally diverse performing arts revealed. Birmingham, 3 – 7 September 2007

This September Birmingham plays host to the third and biggest decibel Performing Arts Showcase – presenting an outstanding programme of culturally diverse performing arts work to leading arts professionals from around the world.

Accompanied by a major international symposium focusing on cultural diversity in the performing arts and the challenges of international touring – the decibel Performing Arts Showcase will offer an unrivalled snapshot of the cutting edge of performance in the UK. Hundreds of leading producers, promoters, venue managers and programmers from across the UK and aboard will gather at the Showcase, all with the chance to discover the fantastic performing arts work that will form the heart of the 2007-2008 season.

From opera to aerial performance, from parkour to puppetry, the whole spectrum of performing arts will be represented by the 52 artists and companies of Black or Minority Ethnic origin who have been selected to present their work.

The visibly career-changing impact of the 2003 and 2005 decibel Performing Arts Showcases had on previous participants, drove a record number of applications to this year’s event.

Artists and works being presented at the showcase include:

  • Hanifa Hudson Art Breaker…The Art of Breakin – the UK’s first female break dancer showcases her unique brand of choreographed art, applying paint to canvas as with every spin, twist and step.
  • Kompany Malakhi, Boxin – this gravity-defying work literally breaks down the barriers to create a junction between dance, parkour, physical theatre, hip-hop and film.
  • Philip Herbert, Kay Smith & Chris Rogers, Lost Chords Unsung Songs – a programme of music by Black composers from pianist Philip Herbert, mezzo-soprano Kay Smith and violinist Chris Rogers.
  • Kali Theatre Company, Zameen – an searing and provocative piece of theatre exploring family relationships and the tensions of progress in modern rural Punjab.
  • Rasa, Shades of Brown – a new one-woman show by Rani Moorthy examining the personal and public politics of colour through the emotive subject of skin pigmentation disorders.

Delegates attending the Performing Arts Showcase will be able to see work at three stages of development:

  • Tour Ready – 30 minute extracts of work that is fully developed and rehearsed, and ready to be booked by a venue or promoter.
  • Work in Progress – 15 minute excerpts of work that is still in development, but which has a basic structure and vision in place.
  • Pitching – 10 minute presentations of ideas relating to ambitious or experimental work, which will benefit considerably from input and collaboration with a venue, producer, or promoter.

The 2007 Performing Arts Showcase will build on the success of the showcases in 2003 and 2005, which gave unparalleled opportunities for professional and creative development to over eighty performing arts professionals. Performers including renowned jazz fusion artist Abram Wilson, pioneering British-Indian dance company Angika, and celebrated performance poet Lemn Sissay presented major work at the 2005 Showcase, and this year’s decibel Showcase will see more artists and delegates than ever before.

“The decibel Performing Arts Showcase is a must-attend event for any arts professional looking to put on the freshest and most challenging new work in the performing arts.”

“A vibrant and dynamic performing arts scene relies on constantly evolving creative cultural relationships, and there is no event quite like the decibel Showcase where these connections can be made.”
Samenua Sesher, Director of decibel
