February 2008 AIR – Artists’ Interaction and Representation AIR, which represents almost 9,000 visual and applied artists nationally, was established in October 2006 after an extensive consultation and review of artists’ practices and aspirations and their future resource. Its establishment has been enabled by a-n The Artists Information Company, a non-profit organisation formed in 1980 to stimulate and support contemporary visual arts practice and affirm the value of artists in society. Steered by an Artists’ Advisory Group of artists drawn from England and Wales that meets quarterly, AIR provides professional benefits and support for artists and includes within its remit a requirement to campaign and lobby to raise awareness of the value of artists in society and to improve their working conditions. AIR offers a modern set of communications for its members that encompasses artists’ open dialogues events around the country, monthly e-bulletins that provide opportunities for consultations with members, and discourse with public bodies and other membership organisations to contribute to policy development, research and campaigns.
