Farnham Maltings to continue the work of Visiting Arts

Farnham Maltings will be continuing many of the key projects developed by Visiting Arts over the past 40 years. Sophia Victoria, consultant with Visiting Arts, will be working with Gavin Stride, CEO and Hannah Slimmon, international producer, on sustaining and developing the work of VA to ‘strengthen intercultural understanding through the arts’. These projects will complement Farnham Maltings’ current biennial assembly of new English Performance run within the Brighton Festival, the training and symposium programme, podcasts and exchange programmes with South Korea, Hong Kong and Canada for artists and producers.

Expanding on our shared ambitions and a great relationship built with Farnham Maltings over the years, I am delighted for this partnership to ensure the work of Visiting Arts continues and enable the development of the valuable programmes and networks we have cultivated. I have no doubt that the team will make the most of the opportunities and look forward to following the projects.” – Yvette Vaughan Jones, former Chief Executive of Visiting Arts

It feels completely right, in these uncertain times, to work at understanding others and to describe who we are to the world. This is a perfect opportunity to ensure a legacy for the hard work of so many people at VA over the past forty years and will, we believe, help more artists and programmers to work internationally.” – Gavin Stride, CEO of Farnham Maltings

Farnham Maltings is a cultural organisation, based in south west Surrey, England that exists to encourage the people of Farnham and further afield to participate in, shape and understand the world in which we live. As well as offering a varied programme of theatre, cinema, craft, music and workshops, Farnham Maltings hosts a number of resident theatre and dance companies who produce and tour work regionally, nationally and internationally. Farnham Maltings’ international strand ‘caravan’ encourages England based theatre makers to think and work internationally. Farnham Maltings produces a biennial showcase of England’s most exciting artists in partnership with Brighton Festival, projects with international partners and professional development opportunities for artists. Projects include a two-year artist exchange programme with Canada in partnership with the British Council and Canadian High Commission, presenting programmes of English based artists at the ACT Festival in Shanghai, collaborative residencies in Seoul and organising producer and artist visits to Hong Kong, Denmark and Georgia.

Since 1977, Visiting Arts has worked on international exchange programmes with some of the world’s most innovative contemporary artists to foster greater understanding and compassion between cultures; engage and inspire young people, communities and future arts professionals. Over the 40+ years of its existence, Visiting Arts has acquired an exemplary reputation for the quality of its engagement, the reach of the work and an enviable network of associates, participants and colleagues. With a range of partners including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Gulbenkian Foundation and Ministries of Culture across the globe, Visiting Arts has conducted research around international cultural leadership including trends in and barriers to international working and needs analysis, and facilitated high quality international relationships between artists and cultural professionals.
