David Lammy addresses Cultural Attachés

David Lammy, Minister for Culture at DCMS, addressed circa 30 members of the cultural diplomatic community of London in May, providing an overview of DCMS activity to acknowledge the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade in the British Empire.  This meeting formed part of a regular programme of events that Visiting Arts arranges on behalf of the diplomatic community, and was generously hosted by the Canadian High Commission at Canada House. David Lammy provided a very personal account of its importance, as well as discussing DCMS’ wider cultural foreign policy.

"The bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade has shown just how powerful cultural activity can be in helping us explore sensitive subjects of national and international importance. It has illustrated not just the importance of learning and understanding our shared history, but it has also shown us just how far culture can reach into our communities and the impact cultural institutions, large and small, can make.

Culture is a hugely powerful medium. We must ensure that the messages and values encased in our cultural activities transcend the traditional boundaries of geography, community, religion and class. The bicentenary has been a wonderful opportunity for us to explore these boundaries and I hope that with your help we can continue the momentum it has generated into 2008 and beyond."
