Russian Federation Museum Curators Study Visit 2007

July saw a second group of museum curators from across the Russian Federation visit the UK for a study tour. The visit, supported by the Vladimir Potanin Foundation (Moscow) and British Council working in partnership with Visiting Arts and the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), was to enable the Russian Federation museum sector to benefit from UK expertise and to develop organisational and professional links with colleagues in the UK.

The group were accompanied from Russia by Anna Genina and Marina Senatskaya from British Council Russia, and Liudmila Burashova from the Potanin Foundation. This is the second such study tour organised by Visiting Arts, building on the success of the first study visit completed last autumn.

The visit again began with a contextualisation morning in London, with presentations by DCMS, Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Museum Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and the Museums Association.  This year, in addition to visits in London, the visit had one regional focus: Yorkshire.

The regional context in Yorkshire was set by Bradford’s Local Authority museums and galleries service, MLA Yorkshire and the National Trust. Visits in Yorkshire were made to the new Discovery Centre in Leeds, Bradford Industrial Museum, Cartwright Hall, National Media Museum, Harewood House, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Victoria Jubilee Museum, Cawthorne.  Accompanied visits in London were to the British Museum, V&A Museum of Childhood, Museum of London and Tate Modern.  Participants also had free time to visit other museums in London according to their own specific interests.

Themes explored during the study tour were audience development and education in museums; social inclusion and partnership; tourism industry and museums; funding and other financial issues; museum networks; and museum governance and management.
