Cultural Attachés Visit to Oxford
In October 2007, 20 Cultural Attachés spent a day in Oxford engaging with contemporary arts and heritage organisations. The visit formed part of Visiting Arts’ ongoing programme of briefings and visits developed for Cultural Attachés and those in the diplomatic community based in the UK. Designed to familiarise Cultural Attachés with current policies, strategic landmarks and new developments within the UK arts sector; it also provides opportunities for Cultural Attachés to familiarise themselves with different areas of the UK, as well as offering opportunities for contacts to be made with arts organisations and cultural operators.
The visit to Oxford was organised with support from Arts Council England South East and Oxford Inspires. Visits were made to the Pitt Rivers Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford Playhouse and OVADA. The visit concluded with a reception at Modern Art Oxford, providing an opportunity to network with the wider cultural community of the South East region.

The visit produced positive feedback from all involved:
"We believe that the arts reflect society, and in today's global community it is crucial that we reach out and embrace international partnership working. As the gateway to Europe and the world, the south east is particularly well-placed to forge those links, which is why we are so delighted to be welcoming 20 cultural attachés representing countries from across the world here today. Oxford has a well-deserved reputation on the international stage, both in the arts and in education, and I am delighted that it has the opportunity today to showcase that work."
Marina Norris, Head of Development at Arts Council England, South East
“Oxford is proud to have been selected to host this prestigious group, especially in the county’s millennium year when the focus has been on Oxfordshire’s rich creative life.”
