Artist to Artist 2008

The 4th edition of Artist to Artist took place in March 2008 and closed with a seminar at the end of the week for the artists to present their work and discuss the benefits of the programme.

Artists selected included:

  • Liz Locke and Mishka Henner (Manchester) with Anupa Mehta (a writer from India)
  • Eduardo Padilha (London) with Marco Rollo (artist from Brazil)
  • Zeneb Sedira (London) with Armina Menia (artist from Algeria)*
  • Free (artists’ collective based in Sheffield) with Simon Sheikh (curator from Sweden)*

*Due to unforeseen circumstances, visits from Simon Sheikh and Armina Menia could not be timetabled for March and have been rescheduled for early May 2008 - the outcomes will be published in June's e-newsletter.

The seminar day at the end of the programme took place at the Royal College Art and was convened by curator David Thorp, who has been involved in the scheme since its inception.

Artists gave individual presentations during the morning and the afternoon session focused on the week they had shared together. Free and Zeneb Sedira spoke about their aims and expectations for their proposed Artist to Artist week and used the seminar opportunity to introduce the work of their visiting artist.

The seminar, in keeping with the intimacy of the Artist to Artist scheme, was designed for participating artists and organisers, with a handful of invited guests.

The artists commented on how this relieved them of the pressure of presenting to a wider public. Below is an extract from one of the presentations - a collaboration between British artists Liz Lock and Mishka Henner and Indian artist Anupta Mehta.

"Voices from the Cold was conceived as a three fold documentation project that aspires to record stories of migration, movement, struggle and success and within it all, the deep, daily sense of loss.

The project is visualised around the lives of middle-aged Gujarati Indian immigrants, who have come to the UK via East Africa and who still feel a strong connection to African and India.

Articulate, educated and clear, they would typically be residing in predominantly Guajarati populated areas, particularly areas of London and Leicester."
