“Great thanks to Visiting Arts and British Council for offering me this opportunity to participate in this programme. The first time I visited London in 2004, I was impressed by the dynamic contemporary art and during this residency I’ve experienced more diversity by visiting cities in the middle and north of England. I greatly appreciate all the arrangements and assistance provided by Mr Nick Slater, (Director, Arts Centre, Loughborough University) during these two and a half months.

The working environment in Loughborough University truly inspired me both in technical and conceptual ways. As the majority of my works are based on digital procession, it was very beneficial to work with the professional Animation Group (Andrew, Gareth and Ben) in the Fairbairn Building, which is organised by Art and Design Department of Loughborough University. Besides the development of my own works in Fairbairn Building, I also participated in lectures on professional techniques of computer programs such as 'Motion Capture' and 'Second life' which gave me new ideas. Here I found the advantages of parallel techniques and ideas in arts practice.”

Susan Stockwell @ Taipei Arts Village

Susan Stockwell was resident at the Taipei Artist Village - a four-story building located in the heart of Taiwan's vibrant Governmental District in Taipei City. Secluded by a serene garden, this facility, a former public office building for the Maintenance Engineering Public Works Bureau of Taipei City Government, has been renovated breathing new life into this thriving area.

“Taiwan is interesting and I think will be good for work…The China /Taiwan debate is interesting as it concerns global politics and Chinese Imperialism.  Will Taiwan be able to stay independent or not? P.C. computer hardware is cheap and Taiwan is the centre where it all came from.  This is a Buddhist country and this city is full of shrines, monks and prayers nestled in amongst a concrete jungle, which has sprung up since the '70s. 40 years ago rice fields and buffalo covered the Taipei area and now Taipei City is a solid mass of concrete high rises and roads, with little greenery.”

Examples of Susan's work during her residency - all drawings are based on the subway maps of Asian cities
