Cultural Attachés visit to King’s Cross, London

In May, a cultural attaché event was held highlighting the emergence of King’s Cross as a new cultural quarter within London.  King’s Cross Central is currently undergoing the largest development in central London for 160 years, and many creative and cultural organisations are moving to the area, joining those already there.  The afternoon event provided an opportunity for key organisations already located within the King’s Cross area along with a selection of those moving to the area to meet a group of 23 cultural attachés, outline their work and highlight their connections to the area.

Presentations were made by Gill Henderson, Director of CreateKX; Penny Hamilton, Head of Public and Regional Marketing at the British Library; Kenneth Tharp, Chief Executive and Chris Thomson, Director of Learning and Access at The Place; Diana Spielberg, Associate Director Development and Learning at Serious; Andrew Burke, Chief Executive of the London Sinfonietta; and Stephen Carpenter, Chief Executive Officer at the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

The group then walked to Kings Place, a brand new building on Regent’s Canal, for a tour of the building lead its developer, Peter Millican of Parabola Land.  The prestigious building houses the first newly built concert hall in London since the Barbican opened 25 years ago in 1982, along with two art galleries.

“Thank-you so much for such an inspiring afternoon yesterday.  The line-up of speakers was very impressive and a clear indication of the importance attached to the work you do.”
Brendan Griggs, Head, Cultural and Academic Relations, High Commission of Canada

The visit confirmed the new sense of place that exists within this creative and intellectual quarter.

Forthcoming cultural attaché events this year include the following:

  • An event marking the EU Year of Intercultural Dialogue, providing UK statutory cultural funding bodies with a platform to explore their engagement with Europe.  To be held at the National Theatre’s The Deck, together with a performance and reception. (July 4)
  • A visit to Scotland within the context of the Edinburgh Festivals, including contact with key organisations in both Edinburgh and Glasgow.  A VIP networking reception will be included.   (August 13-15)
  • A visit to Liverpool during its year as European Capital of Culture, and coinciding with the launch of the Liverpool Biennial. The visit will include a networking reception and access to a Curator’s breakfast.  (September 17 – 19)
