Brazil Cultural Programme
Meeting between Paul Anderson, Pax Nindi and musician Carlinhos Brown with Mark Stevenson Fuo Representatives from carnival organisations across the UK returned from a week-long visit to Salvador de Bahia in mid-April. Paul Anderson (National Centre for Carnival Arts, Luton), David Boyd (The Beat, Belfast), Steve Fletcher and Lorraine Fisher (South Wales Intercultural Community Arts - SWICA) and Pax Nindi (Freelance Carnivalist - St. Paul’s Carnival, World Carnival Commission, Combined Arts Services, Hackney and Luton Borough Councils, and Arts Council of Wales) were accompanied by Visiting Arts associates Anne Sobotta and Mark Stevenson who are based in Bahia. The group had a full schedule of meetings with carnival organisations across the city including Olodum, Didá, Bankoma and Pracatum, as well as being treated to some special performances by young people involved in these projects. The group found the visit inspiring and hope to build long term collaborations with several of the Brazilian organisations in the future. Forthcoming potential outcomes are a youth exchange visit between the UK and Brazil, and visits by Olodum and Bagunçaço to the UK. The visit also cemented links between the UK organisations and individuals on the trip which will lead to the instigation of a consortium of UK carnival organisations which aims to share outcomes and developments in programming, workshops, seminars and exchanges with Brazilian artists.
