Nedko Solakov – A Life (Black & White)

Norwich Gallery is holding the first solo exhibition in Britain of the Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov.
A Life (Black & White) involves two workers constantly repainting the walls of the exhibition space one in black paint and one in white, for the entire duration of the exhibition, day after day following each other.
Before the exhibition opens it is necessary to prepare the space, the supplies and tools and to organise the shifts of painters. The space must be half black, half white when the exhibition opens. At the opening hour of the exhibition, the two painters should start to work. The painters should not rush but should cover the walls in the best possible way. All the time, they must keep in mind that half of the space must be white and half must be black - that is a basic condition. The painters will receive a 10 minute break each hour.
The lunch break is once per day and it lasts 30 minutes. Solakov documents the piece by retaining both sets of the workers’ overalls and the signs used by the workers.
Nedko Solakov (Bulgaria, 1957) has exhibited extensively internationally, including many museum solo exhibitions and participation in the biennials in Istanbul (1992, 1995, 2005), Venice (1993, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2007); São Paulo (1994); Manifesta 1 (1996); Gwangju (1997, 2002) and documenta 12.
Recently "A 12 1/3 (and even more) Year Survey" retrospective was organised by Rooseum Malmoe, Casino Luxembourg and O.K Centrum, Linz.
A Life (Black & White) is by Arts Council England, Norwich School of Art and Design, Norwich City and Visiting Arts.
