Strengthening intercultural understanding through the arts

OUR WORK

We work with artists and cultural professionals expanding knowledge, horizons and opportunities for exchange to open dialogue, further international arts practice and champion intercultural understanding.

Critics Programmes

Arts Critics Programme 2007

The Arts Critics’ Exchange Programme provided the opportunity for emerging arts writers and journalists from Northern Ireland to connect with their counterparts in Washington DC. The six participants undertook an intensive course on arts criticism, immersing themselves in the arts and culture of both Northern Ireland and Washington DC for a 2-week period. The programme ran from 6 May – 19 May, and was funded by Arts Council of Northern Ireland under the Rediscover Northern Ireland Programme.

Young Critics Programme 2006

This programme provided an opportunity for young UK writers to connect with their counterparts in Pakistan, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories through arts criticism. The dozen young writers completed a 10 day workshop on arts criticism by a series of established critics in the UK. Later on the six UK participants visited one of the partnered countries, which offered them an opportunity to celebrate the richness of a different culture and to exercise their critical talents. The Young Critics Programme was also supported by the British Council, the Scottish Arts Council and DCMS.

Two participants of the Young Critics Programme 2006 have recently won awards for their work.  Alex Wood has had her first play The Eleventh Capital staged at the Royal Court earlier this year, and has just been awarded the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright 2007.  The Royal Court has also commissioned Alex to write another play. Miriam Gamble has also just been awarded the Eric Gregory Award for poets under the age of 30.  She has also now been offered the opportunity to get her work published.
