curators visits
Our research visits to countries overseas provide the opportunity for curators looking to expand their knowledge of international artwork in a specific overseas context. The visits often coincide with a festival platform, but have also occurred independently as bespoke visits, depending on the nature of the arts scene in the particular country of study.

A sharing event was programmed at Stills, Edinburgh, Scotland on 5 May this followed on from Bamako Encounters Reflections on the 8th African Photography Biennial event held at Rivington Place, London, in February of this year. This provided the opportunity to focus on the experience of two Scottish curators, Claudia Zeiske – Director of Deveron Arts in Huntly and Dr Sarah Worden - Curator of African Collections at the National Museums in Edinburgh. Both had participated in the Visiting Arts curators’ visit to Mali in November 2009.
The evening’s presentations gave individual perceptions on the work seen there and demonstrated the legacy of the trip in terms of future programmes, highlighting the potential UK collaborative initiatives that can be prompted by a group visit. It was also interesting to note the ways in which the dialogue between ‘museology’ with specialist subject knowledge on collections can also inform the broader experience of contemporary visual art, and vice versa.

Established in 1994, the 2009 Bamako Encounters, Biennial of African Photography, formed the eighth edition of this now well attended event. Curated by Michket Krifa (Tunisia) and Laura Serani (Italy), the comprehensive programme resulted from research undertaken across Africa. Embracing the theme of ‘Borders’ the programme considered how both manmade and natural barriers affect people’s lives.
