Producers visits

Our research visits to countries overseas provide the opportunity for producers looking to expand their knowledge of international artwork in a specific overseas context. The visits often coincide with a festival platform, but have also occurred independently as bespoke visits, depending on the nature of the arts scene in the particular country of study.

Fadjr International Theatre festival

By Executive Director Yvette Vaughan Jones

The visit to the Fadjr International Theatre festival has become an opportunity to keep the relationships between the UK artists and Iranian theatre practitioners going despite the political background. But this year, Visiting Arts did not take a delegation of producers. Many of the artists we had worked with in the past were not taking part in the Festival either because they were working abroad or because their work was not selected by the Fadjr jury. Before going to Iran, we were warned from all advisers, artists, official and unofficial that the situation in Iran had changed a great deal since last year.

Eckhard Thiemann – Reflections On The UK Korea Producers Visit

By Kelly Carmichael

Visiting Arts runs a successful programme of ambitious research visits abroad which seek to provide UK curators and producers with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of international art practice in a specific overseas context. Having recently signed an agreement with the Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS) to promote and support collaborative exchange between the Korean and UK cultural scenes, a Producers’ Visit to the South Korean capital was undertaken in Autumn 2010. Working in partnership with KAMS, Visiting Arts sought to enable participants to develop professional networks between Korea and the UK and encourage collaborative exchange in the performing arts between the two countries.

VA producers' visit to Infecting the City Festival, Cape Town, 2010

Visiting Arts led a delegation of nine practitioners on an inspiring week-long visit to Cape Town in February, 2010.

The first three days of the trip were a whirlwind tour of performances around the centre of the city, taking us to churches, monuments, shopping malls, street corners, gardens and public squares. The second day ended with Bill Gee, Andrew Mitchelson, and Bradley Hemmings on the couch with Brett Bailey for a critical discussion about festival curation, commissioning new performance in light of Infecting the City’s New Collaborative Works model.
