1mile² inspires communities to explore the cultural and ecological diversity of their neighbourhoods through artistic engagement.
Artists and ecologists collaborate and lead activity that enables vital dialogue and knowledge sharing within and between cultural and geographic communities.
To date the programme has involved 42 artists, 18 ecologists, 14 creative organisations and reached over 13 500 people in 10 countries.
Objectives
• To inspire participation in the arts and enable learning opportunities for communities and artists
• To promote biodiversity and sustainability through increasing a shared understanding of our connected local and global environment
• To improve understanding between people of different cultures through increased dialogue and trust within and between communities
• To measure and promote a better understanding of the relationship between culture and the environment
The programme is delivered in partnership with local authorities and a range of cultural, environmental, regeneration and social cohesion organisations.

In February, artists Ackroyd & Harvey travelled to India to participate in 1mile² Delhi 2011. Their first opportunity to work in India was informed by a desire to search out spaces for public interactions and create work in a direct response to place both through living public artworks and photosynthesis portraits.

On Wednesday 30 March, 1mile² Guelph was officially launched at Guelph Youth Music Centre. The event featured a lecture by artist Mary Mattingly as part of the Big Ideas on Art and Culture series and a multimedia performance by Bob Wiseman.
This innovative eight-month project will involve local and international artists exploring how we live, work and act together. Working collaboratively with local ecologists, architects, activists, community leaders, students and residents, the project will run until November 2011. The artists will engage Guelph's many communities through installations, conversations, workshops and public interventions about the city, its urban development, cultural legacy and sustainable future.

On December 14 2009 representatives from all ten 1mile² projects came together at Asia House in London for a sharing event.
Chaired by Sophie Hope, the afternoon provided an opportunity to share reactions and reflections from each project to the diversity of approaches. After an introduction from Yvette Vaughan Jones, Sophie set the context for the afternoon, by providing an overview of the project. The afternoon first focussed on the four UK miles, and then on the six international miles.
