Residency +

Residency + is a programme currently in development. It aims to increase the impact of artist residencies whilst ensuring the most effective use of financial and natural resources.

Visiting Arts is developing the programme in partnership with a number of organisations. We are currently creating a database of residency hosts in the UK, and from the information they share with us, and creating a calendar of international artists’ presence in the UK. This resource will enable us to create opportunities for networking and development, both for the artists and arts organisations in the UK.

Examples of programme models and opportunities devised for Residency + so far are:

  • Residencies within residencies. This model would bring together up to 10 international artists on residency in the UK for a 3-5 day mini-residency to spend time with UK based artists and cultural practitioners discussing the role of the international artist, with time to reflect on their experience in the UK and build more intimate relationships with fellow international and UK-based artists. We are planning an initial pilot for this model in partnership with Dartington Arts, and we will continue explore the possibility of doing similar projects with other residency hosts across the UK in both rural and urban locations.
  • Portfolio presentations. Providing a platform for visiting artists to present their work to an audience of key cultural organisations, venues, hosts and cultural players as an introduction to their practice, and the context of making work in their home country.
  • Networking opportunities. Similar to the portfolio presentations, we will aim to provide artists, particularly those on residency in rural locations, the opportunity to travel to key locations in the UK to meet curators/producers and influential contacts in order to further facilitate their networking experience while in the UK.

Lost Languages And Other Voices - Joy Gregory Retrospective

If Visiting Arts’ ‘Future Thinking’ document is the philosophy behind artist residencies and intercultural dialogue, Joy Gregory is the practice. Over the last 25 years her work has evolved from and explored the characteristics and dynamics of international residencies and exemplified how ‘space’ can become ‘place’ when given connection, context and meaning. An upcoming interview with Joy Gregory will attempt to draw out exactly what is at the heart of an international residency experience and, at a time when dialogue has never been so important, what role residencies and cultural practitioners can play in intercultural understanding.
