Opera Circus presents: Differences in Demolitions – Scottish Tour (Bosnia/UK)

A celebration of composer Nigel Osborne's 60th year and collaboration between the UK and Bosnia & Heregovina, Differences in Demolitions presents a powerful story of conflict, greed and desire in a world surrounded by destruction and demolition.

Hassan, a building worker, cherishes a secret love for Sevda. His family Han (an inn) is cursed. A mythical woman embroiders love, life and fate into a scarf, which becomes torn. Sevda begins her journey, which unravels, like the scarf, to reveal a tale of love, longing and revenge.

In 2006 Nigel Osborne, the eminent Scottish composer, was commissioned by the company to write a chamber opera inspired by the Bosnian music of Sevdah. Opera Circus partnered with National Theatre in Mostar, National Theatre in Sarajevo, Musicians without Borders, the Mostar Sinfonietta and Jassen Productions to create a tour of five major cities in Bosnia & Herzegovina, alongside an education and training programme. The opera then came to London, as part of the City of London Festival at Wilton's Music Hall in July 2007.

The artistic ensemble is made up of artists from Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia and the UK and they will be coming together again to tour in Scotland, May 2008 as part of the Scottish Arts Council's Tune Up touring programme.

The opera is titled Differences in Demolitions after a poem of the same name by Goran Simic (Bosnia & Heregovina). There will be an education programme with the tour as well.

Future tours are planned with partners in Turkey and Austria in autumn 2008 when the company will also return to the Balkan region. In addition tours are planned in the USA and UK for 2009. "..the most lyrically beautiful and stirring new opera heard in years."
Andrew Porter, Times Literary Supplement

"The story draws on mythical archetypes which mix deliciously with Simic’s wit and tenderness and the great-heartedness of Osborne’s melodic flow."
Opera Magazine.

"...like Sevdah music, the opera has heart and soul, not merely technique and it has struck a chord that’s profound and true."
The Independent
